Balayage is lightener painted on by hand for a soft, blended look that grows out gently. Foils place lightener in fine sections wrapped in foil for more even, defined lightness from root to tip. Balayage is lower maintenance; foils give brighter, more uniform results.
How does balayage work?
The colourist paints lightener onto the surface of the hair where light would naturally hit. Because there is no hard line at the root, balayage grows out softly and many clients only refresh it every three to four months.
How do foils work?
Fine sections of hair are woven or sliced, coated with lightener and wrapped in foil. The foil keeps the heat in and the lift even, which gives brighter, more consistent results, especially for blondes.
Which grows out better?
Balayage. Foils start at the root, so regrowth is more visible and usually needs a refresh every six to ten weeks.
Which is better for blondes?
If you want bright, even blonde from root to tip, foils are usually the better choice. If you want sun kissed dimension with a darker root, balayage suits better.
Can you combine them?
Yes. Many colourists use a few foils around the face for brightness and balayage through the lengths for softness. We will suggest the best mix at your free consultation.
